School Community Council Minutes
Wednesday, September 27, 2023

Attendance: Alex Fife, Sasha Beorchia, Kirk Farmer, Alison Sorensen, Jullie Payne

Alex Fife called the meeting to order. Alison Sorensen seconded the motion.

Notification of SCC Election Results to School Community

Size of our council

The council is made up of 4 parents and 2 staff members of the school staff. No other community members volunteered to join the council in the parent role.

Alex Fife motioned to have our council be made up of 4 parents and 2 staff members. Alison Sorensen seconded the vote. The vote was unanimous. Every member voted for the motion.

Elections are held in the fall for the council. There will be no vote of new council members if there are not enough volunteers to fill positions.

Sasha Beorchia motioned to have Alex Fife be the Community Council Chair. Alison seconded the nomination. The vote was unanimous.

Review Meeting Schedule

School Community Council meetings are typically held on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 4:00 pm. There is a date adjustment to two of the meetings below.

Council members viewed an 8 minute video explaining the purpose of the School Community Council.

Order of Business Procedures
-
Members were given time to review Order of Business Procedures. Kirk Farmer asked Jullie Payne to define what a conflict of interest is (see Order of Business Procedures). Jullie gave an example. A conflict of interest could be if a member was voting on an issue where they would benefit financially from the outcome of the vote.

Alex motioned to vote on accepting the rules of order and procedures. Alison seconded it. The vote was unanimous.

School LAND Trust Spending
Some current purchases and upcoming funding expenditures:

Two TVs were purchased to replace old short throw projectors.
-
Conference tickets were purchased for 5 staff members to attend a conference in Salt Lake City about Professional Learning Communities. $6,000 will be spent for this conference. The conference is a two day conference. The cost covers substitutes, housing, and conference fees.

Funding will be spent paying for substitutes to cover for teachers that will attend an IEP meeting.

Funding will pay for one hour of aide time to assist EL students in addition to the instruction provided by the full-time ESL teacher. The school has 25 ELs students.

Goal #3 funds a full time counselor.

Jullie Payne will be meeting with Alan Luce, the North Logan City manager, in the upcoming weeks concerning this sidewalk. This is an informational meeting. Alex Fife asked to attend this meeting.

Jullie Payne mentioned a parent asked if it would be possible to pass out bond flyers at school pickup. Jullie told the parent that she did not feel like that would be appropriate because that was not respecting the parent’s personal space.

IV. Review of Previous Business
A. Safe Routes
1. Discuss area of 800 E without sidewalk
The grant for this sidewalk that the city applied for was not granted.
This issue about building sidewalks in the community is up to
North Logan City as they seek ways to fund the process including
seeking grants from other sources. Concerned parents and citizens
are encouraged to discuss concerns with the city.
B. Overview of Spending (TSSA and Land Trust)
1. PLC Conference
Four teachers and the principal went to this conference Oct 16-17.
The conference was educating attendees about the educational
benefits to student learning from using the practice of effective
professional learning communities.
2. Technology Update
Two new tvs purchased for teachers to replace aging short throw
projectors. Students report the visibility of the content displayed on
the tvs has substantially improved.
Two chromebook carts have been purchased. The chromebooks to
be housed in these carts will be purchased from Cedar Ridge
Elementary at a reduced price when they receive newer models
soon.

School Bond Update
-
The bond was approved. Construction will begin soon on the middle schools. They will be completed in 2026. Elementary schools will be completed in 2027.

Update on School LAND Trust & TSSA Budgets
-
Two new chromebook carts were ordered and have arrived at the school. They will be filled with 77 used chromebooks purchased from Cedar Ridge that have not arrived at the school.
-
Ipads and apple tvs will be purchased to help assist the teachers with material presentation.
-
The other TSSA money sent since our last meeting have been used to fund some of our paraeducators.
IV. New Business

School Safety Grant- $134,350
-
Our school individually applied for this grant and was approved. Possible ideas to increase safety measures:

Bullet resistant glass installed on the exterior doors that are connected to the classrooms.

Improved PA system

Increased surveillance and monitoring using camera security

Additional first aid supplies and “Stop the Bleed” kits

County training meeting at Bridgerland Applied Technology College with “I Love You Guys Foundation”.

District Community Council Update- District Strategic Plan

Superintendent McKee has been tasked to come up with a 20 year strategic plan for the district. The biggest way we can help make change is by responding with feedback to the surveys or contacting the district.

We are supporting 46 children for the holidays.

The chromebook cart has arrived. The chromebooks will be arriving at the school soon after the required programs are installed.

The Tech team came to review which computers need to be replaced. A portion of the budget money will replace the old computers.

MOY Math Data- Progress Towards Goals

Goal: 65% of our students will show typical growth by the end of the year. Scores will be analyzed in April/May to determine if this goal is met.

ATSI is identified with our Hispanic group of students and TSI is identified with our EL learners.

I. Welcome: Alex proposed that the meeting start. Jullie seconded the motion.
II. Approval of past minutes : Kirk proposed that we approve the minutes. Alex seconded the motion.
III. Review of Old Business
A. Update on School LAND Trust & TSSA Budgets

New computers are ordered for teachers whose computers are expiring (This will be coming out of the trust fund and the TSSA Budget).

Math supplies were ordered.
-
Funds will be used to purchase ipads, apple tvs, and apple pencils that will connect with their projectors. This gives the teachers the ability to circulate around the room and help the students while teaching.
IV. New Business
-
ELA Data - Progress Towards Goals. The middle of the year Acadience Reading Composite scores are completed and we reviewed this data together.

Discussion on 24-25 School Year Goals- We discussed how the goals were made in previous years and how we will work more in the next meeting to finalize goals for the upcoming school year. Jullie will share with the council members some examples of goals the council might consider as a starting point for the discussion next month. Additionally, teacher input will be collected to share with the council to assist in the process, too.

The PA system is almost fully functioning. The recently acquired security funds are helping the school to upgrade the PA system.

Trustland and TSSA Funds- Review how funds have been spent

Apple devices were delivered to teachers’ classrooms. Apple tvs will be installed over spring break

33% of our funds remain. These funds may possibly be used to help set up a classroom equipped with technology for a new teacher.

Update on Trustland Plan 2024-25
-
32% of our funds remain. Funds will be expended in the next 2 months.
-
$12,428 left for technology. The money will possibly be used to purchase a new chromebook cart to replace the expiring cart.

IV. New Business

Discussion of School Needs
-
We have had 10 new-comers come to the school. These students have come from Spanish speaking countries and are all learning english.

The district has provided some funds to hire some teaching aids for ESL.
-
The school would like to add a shorter 9-square to the playground.
B. Any other items of discussion
-
Teachers have the opportunity to perform a 4th assessment if the spring assessment is too early for the students. The teachers are concerned that the spring assessment may occur too early and not properly reflect the progress of the students.
